ISWA ISWA, the International Solid Waste Association, is a non-profit organisation whose purpose it is to foster international sustainable waste management through scientific, economic and social means. The ISWA tries to achieve this by maintaining an international network to disseminate information and share experiences, as well as by developing training courses and organising meetings, seminars and conferences, such as the annual ISWA Congress. ISWA has 1,100 members in 64 countries.

logo_vks The VKS, member of the VKU support association, was established in 2002. The members of VKS include private enterprises, trade associations and individuals. The purpose of the association is to support the local organisation `VKS im VKU` in carrying out its tasks. To this end the association particularly facilitates the exchange of experience between representatives of the communal waste management plants and experts of private enterprises, who generate, produce and offer essential technical and organisational equipment and know-how. Further responsibilities include cultivating international contacts. As the support association is a national member of ISWA, it can offer all individuals, enterprises and organisations in Germany the option of participating in international waste management developments. The ISWA Congress 2010 offers an outstanding opportunity for this. Please see further information on VKS im VKU at www.vksimvku.de.

Hamburg and the world

Hamburg and the worldHamburg, gateway to the world, the beautiful, sunny city in the north: the green city on the waterfront is not considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Germany for nothing. Even the otherwise so reserved inhabitants of the Hanseatic town can hardly disguise their pride in the city.

Everyone who has visited the city is thrilled by its flair and maritime charm. Whether the river Elbe or Alster, port district, warehouse district (Speicherstadt), fish market or Reeperbahn, every day there is something new to discover, experience or to marvel at.

As the second largest city in Germany with 1,8 million inhabitants, Hamburg offers unique choices for its visitors: art and culture of the finest, international musicals, ambitious and entertaining theatre, a diversity of hotels, excellent restaurants, exquisite shopping malls, zesty night life, and plenty of historic sights have all left a mark on the city’s 1200-year-old history.

Hamburg is youthful, modernly friendly and cosmopolitan - and at the same time a city full of extremes. On the one hand, there is the colourful but poorest district, St Pauli, with the Reeperbahn, the most sinful mile in the world; on the other hand, the neat and wealthy quarter of Blankenese with its countless mansions and romantic, beautiful views of hillsides and adjacent beaches along the river Elbe. Every corner in Hamburg appears to be different and yet everything falls in place harmoniously. And in the Hamburg Harbour, in the very heart of the city, vessels from all over the world come to dock.

But what really distinguishes Hamburg is a certain attitude towards life - but here you have to convince yourself. We welcome you to our enchanting city and wish you an interesting and relaxing stay.

ISWA allgemein/Allgemeines
logo_bmu_eng The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) supports international endeavours for meeting global challenges.
Recent solid waste management contributes considerably to environmental, climate and resource protection. For this reason high standards must be developed and enforced concerning the collection, recycling and handling of waste. With its `RETech-Initiative`, the BMU backs the spread of organised and technical know-how as well as the research and construction of modern and customised waste disposal systems. Please find further information on the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under www.bmu.de.

BSU_Logo Anja Hajduk
Minister for Urban Development and Environment
of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg

Hamburg is a green city that offers its inhabitants an excellent quality of life and takes its responsibilities for the climate and the environment seriously. The waste sector plays an important role in this. Our aim is to combine safe disposal with maximum resource efficiency, with our long-term goal being the transition from waste management to closed loop recycling. And that is why the Ministry for Urban Development and Environment and the Stadtreinigung Hamburg, our municipal waste disposal company, have initiated a joint recycling offensive. By continuing to improve the reuse of raw materials in waste we aim to save 100,000 tonnes of CO2 a year by 2012.

In 2011 Hamburg will be European Green Capital. And so we are particularly pleased to be able to play host to the ISWA World Congress 2010 and to welcome participants from all over the world to our city.

ISWA allgemein/Startseite

Greeting

Dear Friends,

From the 15th to the 18th of November 2010 the City of Hamburg will host the ISWA World Congress 2010 on Urban Development and Sustainability.

It is a unique possibility to participate in an international forum where outstanding experts in the different fields of Research and Practice will present and discuss the different aspects of a sustainable development in our urbanized world. In several parallel sessions the participants have the opportunity to hear about the latest developments not only on waste management, but on all aspects related to urban development. From technical innovations in the handling and treatment of the different fractions of waste to urban mining, the social aspects of waste generation and the impact of the different aspects of waste on a sustainable development in the cities. There will be the opportunity to visit different waste treatment plants (from sorting facilities to energy production) located in or near Hamburg.

The City of Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany (approx. 1.8 million inhabitants) and it is called Germany’s Gateway to the World. It is famous for Germany’s largest port and its cultural facilities, which I can only mention here, but not describe in detail!

The Congress will take place in the Congress Center, situated in the center of the City in walking distance to the Town Hall and lots of hotels of various standards. Participating in a Congress in the heart of the City is an ideal reason for visiting this outstanding and brilliant City!

I look forward to seeing you at the ISWA World Congress in the third week of November 2010 in Hamburg!
